Here at Red Door Homes, we love lake life. We have built houses on or near lakes and rivers, so we are familiar with the terrain and know what it takes to make your home last for years to come. One of our personal favorite lakes is Tim’s Ford Lake in Winchester, Tennessee.
This three and a half thousand acre lake is known to be one of the top bass fishing spots on this side of the Mississippi. They offer hunting, fishing, camping, glamping, golfing, bird watching, boating, kayaking, and cycling. There is no shortage of things to do or animals to see.
But this lake did not always exist. Like most of rural Tennessee, it was once rich farmland. Then, in the 1960s, TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) started planning for Tim’s Ford Dam to help with the frequent flooding issues and to start using hydroelectric power generation. The result? Elk River and Tim’s Ford Lake. Shortly after came the creation of Tim’s Ford State Park, which led hundreds of families to fall in love with it.
Wildlife is booming inside the State Park. With 135 bird species, 10 unique trees and flowers, a 60ft waterfall, a horse ranch, and six known land animal species (not counting fish or insects), this land is perfect for nature lovers. Imagine waking up to the sound of birds chirping at your window. And while you drink your morning coffee, you are greeted by the deer family that lingers in the woods behind your home. Dog-friendly campsites and trails are also loved by our four-legged friends.
One of the standout features that draws families to this area is the commitment to further education offered through Tennessee State Parks. They provide field trip assistance, customized learning programs, and outreach opportunities for schools, along with funding support for these initiatives. Topics range from General Biology and Regional History to Outdoor Recreation, Animal Adaptations, and even Park Career Options. But it’s not all about work; there is, of course, plenty of fun too! The park houses four playgrounds and several swimming spots, ensuring that families have plenty of opportunities for recreation. Building at Tim’s Ford Lake truly opens up a world of unique childhood experiences for children, blending adventure with education in an unforgettable way.
You are an hour from Huntsville, an hour and a half from Nashville, and a quick 30-minute drive to Lynchburg or Shelbyville for any shopping needs. Nestled within the scenic Cumberland Plateau throughout south-central Tennessee, you can truly have a breathtaking backyard.
