Tullahoma was founded in 1852. The city was originally established as a railroad town by the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad. Its name is derived from the Choctaw words "Tulla" and "Homa," which mean "red rock." During the Civil War, Tullahoma played a strategic role due to its railroads and was a focal point during the Tullahoma Campaign in 1863. 
After the Civil war, the city became a hub for manufacturing, including the founding of Genesco, Tennessee's oldest listed firm. Of course, one can’t forget Whiskey! George Dickle and Jack Daniels are both distilled near by.
The city's military significance continued through the 20th century, particularly with the establishment of Camp Forrest during World War II, which later became Arnold Engineering Development Complex, an important military research facility. Today, Arnold Airforce base continues to power a diverse and growing economy.
